FAQs - Fireplaces and Stoves
Q: Can I have a stove in my house?
A: If your house has an existing chimney it should be relatively straight forward to fit a stove. If your house does not have a chimney we can design and supply a flue system to meet your needs.
Q: Do I need Planning Permission?
A: Only if you are changing the outside appearance of your house, for example if you are installing a new chimney. Planning permission is not normally a problem as there have been many of these installations in recent years.
Q: Do I need a Building Warrant?
A: A building warrant is not always required , as long as you comply with all current building regulations , our stove experts can advise you further.
Q: What size of stove should I buy?
A: It is important that you choose the right size of stove to satisfy your heating requirements , too big a stove will overheat the room and be uncomfortable to live with , too small a stove may not live up to your expectations. As a rough guide multiply length x width x height of your room in metres and divide by fifteen. For example a room 5.0m x 5.0m x 2.4m = 60 cubic mtrs , divide this figure by 15 and the approximate output of the stove you require would be 4 kw.
Q: Should I choose a woodburning stove or a multifuel stove?
A: If you are only planning to burn wood or peat you could consider buying a woodburner , however most of our customer buy multifuel stoves as this allows you to also burn coal.
Q: What style of stove should I choose?
A: We have a large selection of modern and traditional stoves in our showroom. Traditional stoves look great in older properties and inglenook fireplaces , modern style stoves look great in newer properties accompanied with a stainless steel chimney.
Q: Can I heat radiators and hot water with my stove?
A: Yes , if you buy one of our stoves with a boiler. We can work out the capacity of the boiler needed to run your system.
Q: Would I need to line my existing chimney?
A: We would always recommend lining older chimneys to eliminate the risk of smoke leaking into your house , lining will also greatly increase the draw of your chimney which will in turn increase the efficiency of your stove.
Q: What would be the benefits of installing a stove?
A: There is nothing quite the same as heating your house with a stove. Nothing can beat the feeling and atmosphere of the stove burning in your room. The benefits are numerous, a stove will 'breathe' allowing the heat to seep into your home , the constant source of heat and continual air changes will reduce condensation: and by burning renewable fuels such as wood you are participating in a natural cycle that is of great benefit to our environment.
